Revit Structure: A comprehensive note on the placement of structural columns in structural model

This blog holds a lot of significance for the users of Revit structure because I am going to discuss about technicalities of dealing with structural columns in context of structural modeling. Structural columns are indispensable part of structural framework since they are wholeheartedly accountable for bearing the maximum load of the building. And hence their proper placement in 3D model is absolutely crucial for design development team for the intended purpose of generating constructive structural design.

Tackling the complexities of placing columns in 3D model

  • There is no denying the fact that there is a substantial amount of similarity between architectural columns and structural columns. But due to their configuration structural columns can be distinguished from architectural columns in terms of their properties. Their additional properties are defined by their configuration and relevant industry standards.
  • Structural columns are joined by other structural elements such as braces and beams etc.

  • Apart from vertical columns slanted structural columns are also used largely by the design professionals especially in complex and high profile structures. When users place slanted column is a model its top generally have higher elevation compared to its base.
  • The associated levels as well as the offset of the columns are generally defined with the assistance of 1st Click and 2nd Click settings.
  • Revit users must know that Slanted columns never reflect in graphical column schedules.
  • Element properties that are associated with graphical column schedules are never reflected by slanted columns.
